On November 5 2001, IBM announced its intention to make available an applications development platform called Eclipse under an open-source license. This gift from IBM to the developer community is estimated to be worth 40 Million Dollars.
This announcement marks the end of VisualAge for Java in favor of an all-new family of tools based on Eclipse, which goes under the name WebSphere Studio. The first tool of this generation is WebSphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD).
After presenting the challenges of this open-source project, and the architecture of the Eclipse platform, we will show the pertinence of WSAD for the development of server-side applications whether they are J2EE, XML or Web services.
