SSL stands for 'Secure Sockets Layer' and refers to a protocol (or technique) that ensures a secure connection to a web-site. It does this in two ways. First, SSL provides a means by which the parties involved in an information exchange can verify one another's identity. SSL addresses this requirement very nicely by means of digital certificates, which I will explain shortly. Secondly, it changes data into an unreadable format while it traverses an untrusted network like the Internet.
