On November 5 2001, IBM announced its intention to make available an applications development platform called Eclipse under an open-source license. This gift from IBM to the developer community is estimated to be worth 40 Million Dollars. This announcement marks the end of VisualAge for Java in favor of an all-new family of tools based on Eclipse, which goes under the name WebSphere Studio. The first tool of this generation is WebSphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD). After presenting the challenges of this open-source project, and the architecture of the Eclipse platform, we will show the pertinence of WSAD for the development of server-side applications whether they are J2EE, XML or Web services.

Ce cadeau d’IBM à la communauté des développeurs est estimé à 40 millions de dollars. Cette annonce sonne le glas de VisualAge for Java au profit d'une toute nouvelle famille d'outils basés sur Eclipse, qui reprend le nom WebSphere Studio. Le premier outil de cette génération est WebSphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD). Après avoir présenté les enkeux de ce projet open-source, et l'architecture de la plate-forme Eclipse, nous montrerons la pertinence de WSAD pour le d'eveloppement d'applications côté serveur qu'elles soient J2EE, XML ou Services Web.
